Week 5 "ah ha" moment!

When reading on lighting sources what I found interesting is the sun seems to be a photographers enemy due to the fact it makes excellent highlights for photos bute can make other features dull, pale and even flat to the piucture. The next thing I found interesting is when I learned while photo taking outdoors it is best to keep the sun to the photographers back and there is an actual term for this method called (frontlighting).

  1. John, I always thought that the sun was our friend in that it provided light for us and didn't need to use the flash. I know that the sun does help create neat aspects of pictures such as the diagonol lines that shoot out of the clouds (I was always told that this was the clouds gathering water for the rain clouds...lol) or to give shadowing of trees or other subjects to add effect, but certainly does cause some photos to be too bright/blurry or dull.

  2. Getting that sun behind the photographer is good, but the subject, if you're taking a portrait, might be squinting. Sometimes side-lighting is best for that reason.

John, you took this assignment pretty literally by "framing" all your shots with window frames, the ladder, etc., but I had to laugh at the freezer one. You're a hoot. There's that unique eye of yours again, just blew me away. Excellent shot. As you think of framing though, think of natural occurrences of framing and not necessary to find these on all four sides of your shot. Two sides is okay, like a branch over the top horizontal part of a landscape and a tree trunk vertically on the side.

  3. John, I agree it was an ah-ha moment to realize that the sun doesn't always help. I know that in the past I have had a really hard time with getting indoor shots, so I loved the sun, I think that since I have learned more about my camera settings and speeds, it will make me much less reliant on natural light. I also liked the idea of a homemade reflector that we saw in last week's reading.
